I was intrigued by the possibility that timé and Latin aestimatio (esteem) were cognates (sharing the same Indo-European root). They sound very similar, mean basically the same thing. Turns out, according to the authorities, not so! Liddell and Scott (the Greek Lexicon) say that timé is from the verb tiȏ, and the IE root for this is *qew. Counter-intuitively, *ke->te is a recognized sound change from Proto-IE to Greek. Latin aestimatio may in fact have its IE origins in the root *steu (to praise aloud), according to Pokorny (Indo-Germanisches Wörterbuch). So: similar words, same meaning, different linguistic roots. Arguments about meaning based on etymology can be very seductive, but frequently turn out to be wrong, as I have found to my peril on numerous occasions.
